The Power of a Letter

Written by Dawn.

A couple of weeks ago I opened my mailbox at home to discover…GASP…a letter.  A real letter.  A letter that was actually handwritten with a pen.  It was from a former co-worker who had also recently left her job and moved states to be closer to family.  This letter was completely unexpected.  While she was a good friend of mine, in all the hubbub of the move I don’t even recall giving her our new address.

Sadly, I tried to think of the last time I had received a letter in the mail for no real reason. I couldn’t remember exactly. It’s been that long.  But it felt so nice to get this letter in the mail. Actually, something so simple seriously made my day. That someone had sat down and taken the time to send me a letter “just because.”

Shortly after, I had a Giveaway on my personal blog. At the conclusion I announced the winner.  She happened to be a friend from law school that I had not seen since graduation.  I wrote her a quick note that accompanied the gift card she won.  A couple of days later she posted a message on my Facebook page of how nice it was to receive an actual letter in the mail.

That made me sit and think…letters in the mail.  Something so simple.  Something that used to be fairly common.  Something that people still obviously enjoy receiving.  Something that has been replaced by email…where it takes less energy to just quickly type something up and hit “send,” instead of worrying about paper, envelopes and stamps.  It’s a dying practice.  And that is a shame!!

So that gave me an idea…several months ago on our old personal blog I sent out a challenge…a challenge asking people to do Random Acts of Kindness for two weeks.  Then I recapped the acts at the end of the two weeks.  It felt so wonderful to be involved in such a worthwhile thing.  SO, here and on my personal blog I am issuing a challenge…

To Write a Letter.

How simple is that? It can be to anyone…as a thank you, a “thinking of you,” or just a miss you letter.  ANYTHING.  But just do it!!   From now until next Sunday night, September 25, 2011, I challenge you to write this letter.  Feel free to leave a comment here on the blog if you do.  I already have my recipient in mind, and cannot wait to get her letter in the mail!  Who knows, when you write yours, maybe you’ll just make someone’s day!!
